Crypto Lending Resurges 55% as Sector Tackles Interlinked Risks

Crypto lending value locked has surged by more than 55% since July to reach $56 billion, prompting protocols to address systemic risks from interlinked DeFi markets and AI threats.

Crypto lending has seen a significant resurgence following a dismal second quarter, with total lending value locked climbing more than 55% from July to reach approximately $56 billion, according to figures cited by Cointelegraph from Galaxy and DeFiLlama.

The recovery follows a challenging Q2 in which $11.33 billion left the sector, partly driven by a crisis of confidence after an April hack involving Kelp DAO left users of the Aave protocol unable to access their Ether ($ETH). During that exploit, hackers created 116,500 unbacked rsETH tokens worth roughly $290 million, which were used as collateral to borrow other assets on Aave markets. Although Aave's own contracts were not breached, deposits fell by about $15 billion in the following days, and the lending market contracted by 16.78% in Q2.

Holistic Security and Protocol Dependencies

Industry leaders are now adopting stricter risk management frameworks to address the vulnerabilities of interlinked protocols. Stani Kulechov, founder and chief executive of Aave Labs, told Cointelegraph that the protocol has shifted toward a more holistic approach to security that looks beyond smart contracts to evaluate bridges, verifier networks, and external infrastructure.

Other platforms are implementing similar controls. Bitcoin-backed lender Ledn keeps client Bitcoin with qualified custodians instead of deploying it for external yield, according to chief financial officer Thomas Wu. Meanwhile, Spark chief executive Sam MacPherson stated that the protocol reviews governance, operational security, collateral quality, and wider ecosystem dependencies, having phased out rsETH on SparkLend in January.

AI Testing Integration

Protocols are also experimenting with artificial intelligence to bolster defenses. Aave utilized AI-assisted mutation testing on its V4 contracts, successfully catching 271 out of 304 injected vulnerabilities. In a code review of its V3 and V4 codebases using three AI security tools, 71 findings were generated, of which 20 were confirmed as valid after manual review.

Kulechov noted that while AI excels at breadth and speed, approximately 70% of raw findings were false positives, meaning human expert judgment remains critical.
